Pads just don't work for the old school games which required pixel-perfect control, or games which killed the player on the slightest impact, ie- just about all of them.

I've found that even the cursor keys work better than a pad in many cases.

Some time back I built the LPT to Atari controller interface - it made playing so many games a lot better. It's also great for MAME.

For Atari definitely Joystick but I would probably prefer a controller/joypad for P.C and most consoles. Do people still say joypad? usually I find people use controllers now-a-days (maybe its a Victorian thing). I heard a teenager say he "clocked a game" the other day and thought that it was cool that 'clocked' is still used. I guess using the word clocked to mean that you have completed a game started with 'Game and Watch' games because when your score reaches 999 the 'Clock' resets.

I have always wondered why 'Arcade game joysticks' are made so that you have to control with your Left hand. I think I read once that the reason is that Arcade manufactures wanted the games to be finished quickly so as they would take more money. left hand's are generally less Co-ordinated than right ones. Forcing players to use the left (less co-ordinated) hand meant that games were shorter.

When I use my favourite Joystick (the Tac-2) with my C-64, I always hold the controller with my right hand.

I would say that basically intial coin-up games only basically had a joystick. When firing/jumping came into play then the right hand was deemed to have faster reaction times than the left which would just basically control

Actually I'm in the process of trying to pick up some good Atari-compatible joysticks. I used to use crappy Quickshots in my day. They were around the $10.00 mark then but were crap. I considered them disposable as they rarely lasted more than 6 months.

Now I want something good. I think the old saying of a trademan is only a good as his tools applys to video gaming. A good controller makes a massive difference to the enjoyment of a game. I recently bought a trackball controller for my Atari just to play Missile Command. Such an awesome game deserves the best (and original) controller method. It's almost a different game with a good controller.

I'm thinking of getting some old Wico "bat" style sticks, Competition Pros or the old Tac-2 as mentioned by "grapes of gorf".

Anyone else have any suggestions?

Does the Track ball that you bought work with the 2600 and 5200? Is the 2600 version of Missile command a good/great game when using the trackball?

Any Joysticks that use micro switches (same as arcade joysticks) seem to be good lasting and accurate. The Tac-2 does not use micro switches but I have found them to be very good joysticks.

Early Joysticks were made in so many different shapes and sizes, they are cheep and cool to collect. Some joysticks have testosterone enriched names here are some that make me chuckle The "Thrustmaster", "Cheetah annihilator", "marathon" and "captain grant"
