I found some information a while ago on how to make your own Reprogrammable NES cartridge it is based on 2 256k flash chips.
I have so far modified the cart to suit and slotted the chips in and am now trying to get an old programmer that I have had for ages working properly It should be cool when I get time and peace and quiet LOL to do it.
The biggest problem I have had so far is that NES pinouts and my flash chip pinouts differ so therefore some soldering of wires is necessary.
I know you may say what a waste of time .. but it is a project only.. and the pleasure is seeing the end result work
Please let me know what you think
Pete

I think its a great idea mate, i have been collecting as many carts as i can to do the same thing!

i think i have about 30 Super Mario Bros carts that i plan on making into reprogrammable carts so i can put basically whatever i want onto them.

but ive been soo busy with the website that i havent had the time to make one yet.

You should post some pics of your progress when you get a chance, id love to see how it goes!

So where are you at with it pete?

ive just bought 30 eeprom / eproms from a guy at work for $1 each Smile
(theyre 27128/27256/27512)

as far as i can see, the 27256 pinout is very similar to the PRG and CHR chips in the NES carts, ive got a programmer coming in the mail so ill have to do some tests when it gets here = )

How much do the AT's vary. If you tell the numbers on the chips I will be able to post you a board layout that would work. One problem you will need a laser printer (beg, steal or buy one) Next some copper clad and etching equiment from Jaycar. If your interested I'll post you some more information about the procedures to follow.

Smile i have just finished etching a board this evening using the same procedure
Smile

hey vertigo, what pcb layout software do you use? i use diptrace - its free (for upto 250 pins) and works a treat.

i was planning on posting a 'how to' for etching pcb's but just havent found the time.

id be keen to know what projects you have made. Are you a fan of microcontrollers? ive been experimenting with all sorts of projects with them lately.

I can produce boards up to and above 2500 pins. Doublesided or singleside boards.

What method of etching are you using?

lots, but most of them have been hacks, so I'll not be posting them to the public.

Fucking yeah!

Take the time to learn about them first, only because you'll find it easier to figure out what the hell goes wrong.

Oh shit, The software that I use is Proteus 7.2v VSM (Simulator) and ARES (PCB)

PS,
Sorry about the fucked up look in the responses, but you get what I mean.

Before I forget heres some software that is free as well for making PCB's. I havn't used it myself, but from people that I know its pretty good for hobby stuff. http://www.cadsoft.de/ Maybe Brad and Tom would be interested in giving it a go.

I use diptrace to draw up my circuit, print it out on a laser printer (on photo paper) then iron it onto my blank PCB, soak it in water then peel off the paper. Then etch it in some etching solution, drill out the holes and im done!

I used to program for the Z80 processor (in hex!) and made the change to pic microcontrollers just last year, so it was actually quite a smooth transition, its amazing the things you can do with only 35 instructions!

I should have my latest project finished this week, its one of those POV - persistance of vision circuits where you have a row of leds (in my case 32) that spin around to give you images, animations and scrolling text etc...

when i get time ill upload some pics etc...

I'm also working on a handheld video game system that uses a 16x16 led display. you will be able to play loads of different games on it - some ive got in the pipeline are:

Tetris
space invaders
snake
car race
etc...

just simple games that could fit on a 16x16 display.

Do you have any circuits you have designed with microcontrollers? it would be good to ba able to exchange ideas and programming tips.

Don't distake PCB, etching is done on clad (Copper) PCB is the product, it's (pros or cons:) vias, pins, traces, pads, layers, etc/ You have no idea how hard it is! YET.

I think we just call it a different name copper clad / blank PCB

and believe me, i know how hard it is - ive been working with electronics since i was 10 years old!

I call that "raw clad".

How do you sratch the clad/prep/cleaning?

The clad you have shown, looks to be copper on both sides! If you just want singlesided boards, don't waste you time ecthing both sides.<hint> Buy in larger sizes and save money<hint>.

PS Nice: (I hope you don't get carpet burns)
