Hi there everyone.

I've been trying to get my A590 harddisk to work on my A500 - but no success.

Does anyone know how to get this thing to self boot? im pretty sure it has workbench loaded onto it already.

or

Is there a way to get it recognised in workbench if i just booted from a disk?

any help is much appreciated!

I have one of these but it is stored out in the shed with quite a bit of my stuff. I vaguely remember that it will only work with kickstart 1.2 or 1.3 and that there was a risk of frying it if anything higher was used - not sure why.
There are some dip switch settings such as:
Switch 1
OFF: Disables Autoboot ROMs (Kickstart 1.2)
ON: Enables Autoboot ROMs (Kickstart 1.3)
Not sure if that would make a difference.
It would be interesting to see if the A500 finds the drive booting from a workbench 1.3 floppy (might be the install floppy). If it does then I think you could install workbench to the A590 using the HDTOOLS.
I have a pdf copy of the service manual that I could ping your way if you don't have it already.

G'day... all amiga's need kickstart 1.3 or above to autoboot from a harddrive. The commodore engineers added the bootstrap code to KS1.3 to allow auto booting from different devices, harddrives included.

With your A590 you will need the following correct before it will autoboot

I will need to be formated with the FastFileSystem (FFS)
it will need a bootsector with bootcode >usually done at harddrive setup.. ie make device autoboot option set<
a mountlist entry for the device to use

will need the device boot priority set to a low number.. a number less than the normal internal floppy drive >if I remember correctly thats a number of around -5 or so<

The best way for you to get the A590 up and working is to setup the drive again using hdtoolbox software that should automate a few of the above steps

Please read through this forum post
http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?p=416732

and you can also use this software, I believe its a much nicer hard drive setup program to use for your a590

hope that helps

Hi again.. found this tech description for the jumper switches on your A590

http://l8r.net/technical/t-a590.shtml

should help you to set the KS1.3 boot option and mem config

here is a list of all harddrive controllers for the Amiga range of computers.. your A590 disk is towards the bottom of the list

http://www.l8r.net/install/hdc.html

hope that helps

Thanks again guys for all the helpful info. It looks all good now!

- Those links were a great help also!

I've never had an a500 with a harddisk before - no more disk swapping!

Glad you got the A590 working!

dont forget you can add an external SCSI cdrom connected to the 25pin port on the back of the a590

Set the scsi ID numbers on all devices to something different from each other
>and different from the host scsi controller ID number<

Hi Az,

I actually have an A570 - but unfortunately no cd caddy for it.

Any idea where to pick up one of these from?
